Tyrell Bay

Tyrell Bay, Harvey Vale, Carriacou, I have designated as paradise lost!

This once clear, calm sparkling water is now polluted beyond recovery.

The jacks and other marine life have disappeared, the vibrant sea weeds are dead and there is no more a sandy bottom; instead the sea bed is covered with a black slimy substance which could only be the remnants of effluents from the numerous "house" boats that have moored there for the past ten or more years!

I went into the water a few months ago and I had to hurry out. My eyes were burning and my skin itching. This may have been the result of the old oil release from the numerous boats.

Every type of litter may be seen in the water- plastic, bottles, cans, tyres and whatever. Even the coastline is inundated with similar discards.

The sad thing is that no one seems to care.

I compliment Dr Peters for his courage in attempting to highlight the many issues of pollution posed mainly by those "house" boats. It was time  that someone spoke out for this Lost Paradise.

Young Jules and a few wise and courageous people spoke but no one listened or acted.

The filth has destroyed the bay, the fishes (fishermen's livelihood) and the oyster bed. Paradise is lost!

The main port to be established/erected in Tyrell Bay would just exacerbate the problem. Where there is no vision the people suffer?

Who are these boat people anyway? Why have they been allowed to (anchor their boats) take up permanent residence in Tyrell Bay? What is the status? How do they discard of their various types of wastes?  Who monitor them?

Carriacou is too small for any significant invasion. Our ecosystem is too fragile.
