Abe was leaning over the face basin in their bathroom brushing his teeth while his wife, Shirley, sitting on the toilet suddenly remarked that their local MP, the Honorable Darnly Alex Frederick Thomas was retiring from active politics. She continued that the minister had made the startling announcement during a Press Conference the previous day, claiming health and personal reasons.
Abraham unable to discern the relevance of the information, finished his brushing and commenced his flossing.
Shirley eliciting no immediate response from her husband, continued on the subject of the politician's resignation. That he has stated his intention, was devoting his time to the family business- a funeral agency.
But the public knew that the hon. D.A.F.T. had been asked to submit his resignation after large sums of money could not be accounted for by the Ministry of Transportation, leading to the blacklisting of the government by a major international bank. And so the people were asking who would replace the M.P.
Shirley's tone was so matter-of-fact that she now had his attention. After all, living with this woman for fifteen years Abe was fully aware of her variety of communication techniques. She never shared information lightly- there was always an underlying motive, a hidden meaning in the message. So Abe had learnt that the best method to employ in order to get Shirley 's message was to be patient and appear disinterested. She was angered by his indifference and would soon come to the point.
Abraham was suddenly curious of her motive. He could see no reason for this piece of information. His wife knew that he despised all politicians and that he shunned discussing political issues. So why was she telling him about this politician? He only hoped that she was not planning to ... But she couldn't anyway as she was still a US citizen. He would wait.
Since he had dropped out of St Clair High School at sixteen, having struggled up to Form Three, he had fended for himself. He had decided the that books were not for him, so he became an employee in the funeral agency. When he was sent to retrieve the remains of a three day old deceased, he concluded that he had enough of dead people.
Driving trucks was always his ambition, so he was delighted to gain employment as an apprentice mechanic in Fixit Garage. Now he had found his true calling- he could work miracles on any broken down truck. So he had made a name for himself literally building his first truck. Now, he Abraham Selwin Sanford, was owner of A.S.S. Trucking.
Abe's loathing for politicians was also shared with ministers of religion. He considered those two classes of people as the most despicable people on earth. His feelings were based on two unforgettable experiences. The first was encountering the most highly respected politician, in a very compromising position with his girlfriend, while the pastor's crude attempt to fondle him, convinced him that those people were evil and should be avoided. So any reference to church or government always engendered a rage in Abe, even though he had never shared his experiences with anyone.
Now why was Shirley telling him about the Minister's resignation? What was he motive? Shirley never gave such information idly. He would just be patient and wait.
Shirley was a shrewd woman, and he greatest fault was he aggressiveness. She was the typical American woman- bossy, brash, loud and manipulative. she had spent her formative years in that great country, engaging in innumerable escapades before her parents decided for their own safety and peace of mind, that she would be better in the Caribbean. So they brought her. When she arrived in Sinclair at sixteen, she had already built up a strong acquaintance with the New York police. Her exploits included shoplifting, soliciting and gang-related activities. Her experiences far outstripped her years and it showed.
Shirley was beautiful. She had a great body and she knew how to use it. Her full breasts, narrow waistline and wide hips and long shapely legs, never failed to attract all kinds of men and to arouse jealousy and anger in women. She has short hair (by choice) dark brown eyes, a small nose and full lips which revealed perfect teeth. She had a most provocative walk which seemed to be choreographed to tease. Now at thirty-five, with three children, she was still alluring and Abe, seven years her senior was an extremely possessive man.
Shirley's arrival in Sinclair had created quite a stir in this quiet community. Many long established love affairs were wrecked because of her. The young hunted her with passion, while the older men moaned for their lost youth. As for Abraham he behaved like a man possessed. He followed her around wherever she went and did any and everything to win her.
Shirley was not quite ready to settle down into a stable relationship and did everything to keep Abe away. But she could not ignore him, and besides Sinclair was not like New York. So finally she agreed to be his wife, but for a price. He would have to be hers to own.
Abraham had always been easygoing and popular, especially with the ladies. He was tall, muscular and somewhat handsome, but not very bright in his communication. His main topics of conversation were engines, trucks, wrestling and girls. Bust since marrying Shirley, she had demanded
that he abandon any discussion or mention of girls. He grudgingly agreed. Shirley managed the Trucking business with such efficiency that amazed everyone. Even she admitted that she never dreamt that she could settle in Sinclair, much more to develop a thriving enterprise. Abe was overjoyed he had the most beautiful wife and a flourishing business. They were making money. His life though had changed to work, work and work. He no longer had time for the boys, not even for a beer and local gossip.
Shirley issued the orders and he obeyed. He finished attending to his teeth and waited patiently but with some unease. He turned and looked at his wife. Shirley sensing the anxiety under his apparent calm, blurted out:
"You, Abraham Selwin Sanford will be running for the seat vacated by D.A.F.T."
He remained speechless for a long time before he stammered,
"me, me, me a politician?"
