Carlton received the message that Tanty wanted to see him when....

When Carlton entered the shop for his regular Friday night dominoes game, Popeye, the shopkeeper promptly informed him that Tanty needed to see him urgently. Carlton grumbled "want to see me? ah wonder what she want?"

Tanty was a very independent person, who relied on no one. She was a pleasant and good-natured soul, but she always kept to herself. She asked no favors and so she always preferred to pay for what she wanted. She had a large store of quotes but her popular ones were:
"The ants never borrow, the ants never lend"
"Neither a borrower nor a lender be"

No wonder that Carton was curious. He suspected that whatever it was, it may have to involve the use of his truck. Carlton's truck was the chief form of transportation in the village, it was used to carry everything- building materials, produce for the market, grocery from the city, barrels from the pier, excursionists, mourners for a funeral, the sick and the injured, it had transported them all. It even served as a water wagon, bringing this most precious commodity to the village. This truck in addition to being the life-line of the village was Carlton's provider. Everything that he owned came from the truck. He was sure that Tanty had a work for him, so he decided to go to see her early the next morning.
